At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
