United Kingdom Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert Roster with Eleven Nations

Methanol caution sign

British government has placed 11 new nations to its travel advisory register regarding the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just recently, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, following several high-profile incidents like the deadly death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the creation of beverages, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Official Guidance for Tourists

Authorities official Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While having drinks in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official advised.

"Should anything appears suspicious, like a headache that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."

The entire list of destinations identified as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
