Unusual Red Electrical Discharge Recorded in Skies
A group of image specialists based in the island nation have successfully captured images of crimson flashes, one of the most elusive celestial events in the world, during which bright red bursts become visible in the sky.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
This group of artists began their evening to photograph the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the rare phenomenon.
Assuming they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that night, but their expedition transformed into “a night to remember,” one photographer remarked.
“He was checking his photographs for a stellar landscape and realized he had captured scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer said. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, produced by electrical storms. In contrast to conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the ground, the phenomena ascend towards the upper atmosphere, producing structures that resemble columns, carrots or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was taken – accidentally – in 1989, by a research unit at the an educational institution.
Momentary and Ethereal Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but an individual got lucky. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward a sprite when it took place – pure chance observing the right part of the heavens and I observed a brief red flash,” he explained.
Observing the events was a goal for this individual, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It looks like you witness something that is not real, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to see.”
Advanced and Innovative Mastery
Capturing a this phenomenon demands a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with science and artistic vision, the individual explained. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”
Another photographer commented it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band illuminating above the skyline while these enormous red tendrils of energy moved above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no other images depicting red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you are observing something you’ll probably never see again.”
